Director Julie Dash on the Red Carpet at 21st Urbanworld Film Festival

Julie Dash was on the red carpet of the latest Urbanworld Film Festival promoting the Spring premiere episode if OWN's Queen Sugar which she directed. She generously offered her thoughts about the film and television business and looked back in her own experience as a groundbreaker. Dash's cinematic masterpiece, Daughter of the Dust, which was released in 1991, was the first time a film by an African-American woman had a film in wide theatrical release.

A whole new generation got introduced to Dash when elements of her iconic film made their way into Beyonce's Lemonade video dominated social conversation around the globe for weeks after its release.
